  In 1983, the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, called for a special gathering of young people, and the response was overwhelming. The pope officially instituted World Youth Day in December 1985, and ever since, the Catholic Church around the world has celebrated young people in these massive global gatherings.
  
  Attending World Youth Day is a pilgrimage, involving both joys and challenges. It is important to understand the spirit of the pilgrimage and the commitment and preparation involved before you register to join.
